How to: Open Office 2007 Documents in OpenOffice with OpenXML Translator

Did someone send you an office document that ends in an “x” and now you can’t open it? This howto will show you how to open .docx, pptx, and xlsx documents in Ubuntu.

Since you may have found this article because you are in a bind and need to finish work or an assignment, let’s get right to it.

First, you will want OpenOffice. You most likely already have it, but if not click

Applications > Add/Remove…

A window will come up titled “Add/Remove Applications”. In the Search box, type office. Make sure that the drop down titled “Show” has “All available applications” selected.

The first 5 results that appear will begin with OpenOffice.org. Check off all the OpenOffice.org applications.

When you have the application that you want checked, click the button labelled “Apply Changes”. You may be asked for your password. Type it in if asked. Once the applications are done downloading and installing, you can click “Close”.

Next, you need to grab the OpenOffice.org OpenXML Translator. You can download it here.

Just select the file for your version of Ubuntu under the heading Latest Versions on the page. If you don’t know, you probably want this one.

Now that the OpenOffice.org OpenXML Translator is downloaded to your desktop, just double-click the .deb file. It will probably look something like this:

A new window titled “Package Installer” will open up. You will see a button on the top right corner of this window labeled “Install Package”. Click it. Type in your password if prompted.

Once the installation is complete, you can close this window. You are now ready to open those OpenXML documents. Start the OpenOffice.org application that you need by clicking

Applications > Office > OpenOffice.org…

Once in OpenOffice.org, click File > Open… and select the file that you would like to open.
