Courtney Oliver - the certified genius and certified Veterinary Assistant - she’s 10 years old
As if she’s nothing special, Courtney says its just what she has always wanted to do. “I have a do, Maggie, and two hamsters and I just thought: ‘Well, if I have so many animals why not just work with them?’”
At South Bay Veterinarian hospital in Olympia, Dr. Michelle Shoemaker is Courtney’s mentor and has helped her through everything, even her initial fear of blood. To the other veterinarian assistants surprise, Courtney is quizzed quite often at the hospital and “always know the answers”. Dr. Shoemaker says Courtney has always been a very bright, “Amazing girl”.
Despite her new college degree and apparent qualifications, Courtney must be accompanied by her mother at the hospital. The law says she too young. Because of her age, she was also denied admission to her local 4-H, a job training veterinary program. But, it’s no mind to Courtney who’s concern is tending to her patients. She volunteers at Dr. Shoemaker’s hospital once every week.
“Dr. Shoemaker and I are like twins.” Courtney says. “We just love animals. We just wanted to do this because this is our thing.”
How amazing to even know her “thing” at tens years old. Now excuse me while I look up application to online universities.
